Blue Screen of Death

We hear a lot about blue screen errors and the blue screen of death but how did it get its name?

The term "Blue Screen of Death" first arose during the early stages of development work on OS/2 at Lattice Inc. They were the builders of an early Windows and OS/2 C compiler. It was discovered that during porting of Lattice's other tools the stop screen happened when NULL pointers were dereferenced either in application code or when passed unexpectedly into system API calls.

When they were reviewing the progress that had been made and and when feeding back to IBM in Texas, the developers coined the phrase "Blue Screen of Death" to denote the screen and the finality of the occurence.

Thus the term "blue screen of death" gradually came in to common use.
